When Kids Love the Classes They Learn So Much Faster.
Kids karate classes are a proven way to help kids improve listening in a way that is actually FUN! Many parents are surprised to find the very first lesson we teach every new student is not a kick or punch but rather how to show respect thru listening.
How Do We Teach Listening in our Kids Karate Classes??
In the dojo (karate school) we break listening down into 4 key elements:
1- Eyes- all listening begins with good eye contact. Kids hear all the time from parents and teachers to pay attention and listen, but so often eye contacts is over looked. The example we give the kids that parents do everyday- listening with their eyes is driving. Every time we step behind the wheel as adults we are “listening” to the drive, from stop lights, to turn signals, road signs and more.
2- Ears- this one is reasonable easy- making sure there are no earbuds in when mom/dad/teachers are talking to them
3- Body- Listening with the body is all about controlling the fidgets, and trying our hardest to stay reasonable still with our bodies facing the person speaking.
4- Mouth- we listen with our mouths by taking turns, speaking or raising our hand in a class room and waiting to be called on. We make the promise with all our karate kids, that if THEY show us great listening WE will teach them all kinds of cool karate moves and make them great karate students.
In fact reciting these 4 ways to listen without any assistance is how each student in our Kids Karate Classes earns their white belt. We offer classes for “Ninjas” ages 5-7 and Juniors Ages 8-teen. We have found that the first part of making great Black Belts in our community starts with teaching our kids to be Great Listeners both on and off the mat.
