Self-Defense Tactics Inspired by Everyday Objects You Carry

When it comes to self-defense, you don’t always need specialized equipment. Everyday items you carry can double as effective tools in protecting yourself during unexpected situations. Here are five common objects and how you can use them for self-defense.

1. Pocket Knife

If you are like me an Amazon or UPS box is at your front door pretty regularly, and sure you can punch your way into it or rip it with your teeth like a savage. However I think you know that the right tool is a pocket knife. Not only does a pocket knife make quick work of inspecting your latest haul its also a great tool for self defense. Its generally a good idea to get a simple folder, and make sure its quality, but also cheap enough that you wont be disappointed if you lose it. End of the day the difference between a $20 knife and a $200 is non-existent when they go missing. I would recommend the the Spyderco Byrd or CRKT Pilar . Both are good quality and hold an edge well thru plenty of abuse, they are both small too so they are easy to carry everyday.

2. Pen or Pencil

A sturdy pen or pencil can become a powerful self-defense tool. Grip it firmly and use it as a stabbing instrument to target pressure points or vulnerable areas like the hands or face. If you want to step up to the next level amazon has several “tactical pens” available, but I would recommend a cheaper model as like the knife there’s a good chance you lose it, so you want it cheap enough to replace yearly without too much disappointment.

3. Smartphone

A smartphone’s video feature is a great deterrent, if you are feeling threatened a camera phone popped out may make an attacker thing twice about their intent. Be aware though, shoving it in their face can be a prescription for a broken phone. If all else fails, throw it to distract your attacker while you create an escape route.

4. Umbrella/Snow Brush

A compact umbrella can function like a baton, while a long umbrella can act as a staff. Use it to block strikes, push away an attacker, or swing at vulnerable areas like knees or shins. The snow bush is another inconspicuous weapon, be sure to get one with the T shape design wooden handle with the screw on brush head. If you only have a bat in your trunk a court may argue you were looking for trouble, but a snow brush is just plain practical/tactical!

5. Bag or Purse

A handbag, purse, or backpack can serve as a shield or a swinging weapon. Use the strap to whip at the attacker or swing the bag for impact, aiming at the attacker’s torso or head.
